The very sight of the moon sets me dreaming.

Dear Moon, how it must have been to cast your light in anticipation upon that night. How you must have bowed to welcome the Beloved upon that dawn. How it must have been to be graced by his Noble Touch. How, how must it have felt to set eyes upon a Light that precedes even yours. Endless peace and blessings upon him.

O Seeker, cast your eyes upon all that has beheld him. Peace and blessings upon him always, forever, eternally. Let this light consume you. Let this light consume you until there is no you. How it must feel to be illuminated by his brilliance alone!

My thoughts keep pulling me here to where the earth is blessed, to where the water still gushes forth in ecstasy and to where the trees that witnessed him must have stood gleaming. Here, he rested a while and here his Noble Companion, the Truthful, stood shading him. Peace and blessings upon him ceaselessly from here to the Heavens and beyond.

Seek Him then by shading his Beloved, endless peace and blessings upon him. Certainly, He, the Shade-Giver, will not leave you without cover.

On Shunning

These days, my thoughts keep returning to a hill in Üsküdar. There, above the clamor and bustle of the port, is stillness. There, the student who used to rise during the coldness of the night to pour warm water for his teacher came to teach. There, near his resting place, Mercy descends.

It is there, the dear guide must have penned his Nivahend — He who seeks that sign of Beauty.

Hearts that tell that Beauty’s story

cherish things past speech itself.

Every man that knows that glory

shuns his self, then shuns his self.

Truely, his was a shunning of the self. May his soul and that of his teacher be sanctified.

How Mevlana must have walked this earth? His every step a witness to Signs Divine!

The sight of a tree must have carried him to that First Meeting. The human being resembles a tree; its root is a covenant with God: that root must be cherished with all one’s might.

Renew this covenant over and over again, O Seeker. Do not get lost in your seeking.

Mevlana tells the tale of separation, “Everyone who is left far from his Source wishes back the time when he was united with It.”

Do not despair, O Seeker! Do you hear all that envelopes thee?

“My secret is not distant from My cries, but physical eyes and ears do not possess the light (to see it)”, he continues.

Listen intently then.

Perchance you shall be returned to the reed-bed from whence you came.

Awe-struck, I stood in silence until He gently nudged me to continue. It was then, along the very same path, I overheard an eager seeker questioning the venerable Bayzid Bistami, may his soul too be sanctified. “Which of the Divine Names is the Greatest Name?”, he asked. With deep certainty echoing in his voice, the Friend responded, “Which of the Names of God, Exalted is He, is the least that you should ask me which of Them is the Greatest Name?”

Sometimes you stumble upon such profound words that it seems His Friends are greeting you upon the very path you tread.

And so it was that I encountered the great Shibli, may his soul be sanctified. He said to those who claimed to love him,

Did I hear you saying that you loved me? You could not even bear my throwing a stone at you, and you began to run away. What became of that sincere love that you had for me?

Journey with heart then, O seeker. And endure patiently. Perchance, you will be rewarded with His Love.

On Love and Understanding

A seeker heard, ”If it was Farsi that was necessary to understand Mevlana, then all those who speak Farsi would be Mevlevi. It is, rather, learning the Language of Mevlana that is required. …like it is not Arabic that is necessary to understand the Word of God, it is the Language of God that is necessary.”

Certainly, upon the Path of Love, the Language of Mevlana is but a means to the Language of God.
